A History and How We Do It....

It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure

The art of glasswork has been around for over 4,000 years over many civilizations.  Glass beads have been used not only for fashion and design but also as a trade item for goods and wares, to display wealth and power and to identify family and community relationships.  Generally made from the same elemental components that it was thousand of years ago, glass is formed from silica, soda ash and limestone which is then all heated together at temperatures of over 1700°F.

Allotropy Designs Studio is based in a small space in downtown Vancouver just north of the Portland Metro area.  Our studio is filled with highly specialized kilns, torches and other tools that allow us to shape your discarded bottles into our stunning final products.

Working with recycled glass presents a unique challenge.  Unlike glass purchased from a glass store, the melting temperatures and expansion qualities (COE) of each recycled glass bottle is different and unknown to anyone but the manufacturer of the bottle.  This makes the process of creating something beautiful from this material especially difficult and also makes the end result especially fulfilling.
